WASHINGTON — Sen. Evan Bayh offered some rancorous comments about the troubled political climate that has descended on the nation's capital when he announced his decision to retire from Congress last month, but the bitter remarks don't seem to have affected the regard fellow Democrats hold for their departing colleague.
It's funny what having a full bank account can do. Bayh amassed a huge war chest totaling almost $13 million before his startling decision to abort his campaign for a third six-year term. Almost immediately politicians and voters of various stripes began wondering what he planned to do with all that money.
Bayh has remained coy to this point, handing out only hints of his intentions during the four weeks since his announcement that he was retiring from Congress. Brian Weiss, the lawmaker's press secretary, said Tuesday that "no decisions have been made.''
