And I can you, I used to love it when people would do that. It meant I got to sit there and read my book or text my friends. It was like having an extra break. If you ACTUALLY want to piss off the telemarketer your best bet is to let them read the entire script, and then act like you dont understand and ask them to repeat it over and over.

...I most likely would have done with that call as I do with most annoying calls:

I would have told them that I was just visiting and they needed to talk to the homeowner who I thought would be really interested. I then put the phone down and ignore the call thereafter.

For awhile I got calls from some religious anti-abortion group and I put on my slightly-hick voice (you know the people on tv who always say they "feel so blessed" that their kid was only maimed for life and not killed in the train wreck? that one) -- and let 'er rip on the subject of how many abortions Planned Parenthood *prevents* by supplying contraceptives and accurate information. I preface by saying I am a praying woman. Well I am, I just don't say to WHOM.

36. A little harmless mischief is exactly what we should be doing with these calls.

Mainly - TIE THEM UP ON THE PHONE FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN STAND.

VERY civil. VERY "innocent." Keep them on the line. The longer they're stuck trying to explain themselves to you - like Clintonista2 describes upthread in post 26 - the better. That's fewer of their own ilk whom they can call and from whom they might be able to extract donations. The more you keep them tied up - AWAY from their objective (because they think they might be able to win you over or "educate" you as a "wavering 'republi-CON'" the better. REALLY like the idea of letting them run through their entire script (don't stop 'em - that's maybe when you can text somebody or go dry a dish or play with the cat or something) and then saying you don't quite understand and could they please go over that again? Or maybe could they go over that part about (fill in the blank here) just once more - 'cause you're not quite sure. That is BRILLIANT!!!! If you just hang up immediately or tell them off, they'll simply move on to the next call and eventually (probably sooner than later with the lists they're working with) find friendlier turf and a more open checkbook (we do NOT want this!!!!!).

Tie 'em up. Waste their time. Keep them from moving on to the next prospect who will likely be more receptive than you were. Rack up those minutes and grow that phone bill - THEY called YOU, after all.
