So Close: 1-Point Edge For Fiorina

Carly Fiorina has pulled just ahead of former Rep. Tom Campbell in their race for the Republican Senate nomination in California, according to a new poll, but many primary voters are still making up their minds and a third candidate in the race is getting a well-timed boost.

A survey conducted March 9-16 by Public Policy Institute of California found Fiorina leading Campbell 24 percent to 23 percent among Republican primary voters. While they're statistically even, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore was well behind, favored by only 8 percent, and 44 were percent undecided.

PPIC's findings are at odds with a Field Poll released last week that was conducted over the same time period. The Field Poll found that Campbell led Fiorina 28 to 22 percent with DeVore at 9 percent. Both polls, however, have found that the primary race has tightened since Campbell first joined the field in January.

Spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said Fiorina would continue to build on the 12-point gain since the January PPIC poll.

6. There's no Gray Davis now.

That was an extremely odd situation in which it wasn't even a real election. If he went one on one with Davis, it would have been close. Even the recall was a 9-point loss, in the worst possible climate. But Davis won by five points against a real candidate, Bill Simon, the year before. Things'll be fine. Might lose a few assembly seats though...

I might swallow my words down the road, but so far what we've seen of Carly is distinctly underwhelming. She's doing okay right now, because Dems are disengaged and because she's been spending oodles of cash. But her campaign even now has been beyond gaffe-prone what with bizarre ads, puzzling public statements, and a message that oscillates between moderation and hard-right conservatism. Boxer will be fine.

Campbell could be a good deal tougher. However, his last statewide race - his 2000 Senate race against Feinstein - was a debacle. So that perhaps gives some hope.
