Today, President Obama announced 15 recess appointments of nominees that had been subjected to lengthy delays from a small minority of Senators. Among them is Chai Feldblum — an openly lesbian woman who the President nominated to be a commissioner on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on September 14, 2009.
Ms. Feldblum’s appointment is critical to addressing fair workplaces. According to a December 15, 2009 article in the National Law Journal, there is a backlog of more than 70,000 discrimination claims at the EEOC and until now the commission lacked a quorum, preventing them from dealing effectively with claims of discrimination.
Ms. Feldblum is exceptionally well qualified to serve as a commissioner on the EEOC. She is a professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center and is the director of the Federal Legislation and Administrative Clinic. Ms. Feldblum has been a leader in the areas of disability rights, health care and LGBT policy. She is an expert on workplace policies and laws, and was a key drafter of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
