I Trust President Obama On The Oil Thing

.......I Do........I think Obama has a strategy game he is playing here and what may seem as betrayal of the base is actually method to paint the REPUGS into a corner on a issue near and dear to their platform....

......Sarah Palin may think she has won the DRILL BABY DRILL WAR today......I think she best watch out for her own hand to reach out and SLAP HER silly....

Have patients and grab some popcorn cause this is going to be good watching the hypocrisy run wild.

why in the hell didn't they do a better media "roll-out" in terms of what they were announcing? It just hit with a thud leaving everyone feeling confused (and seemingly betrayed).

I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I am fighting to do so.

4. I saw this in the Comments section of a piece by
Steve Benen in WashingtonMonthly.

"Progressives need to relax on policy like this. If you read this article you will see that Obama leaves final decision to drill offshore to the states' legislatures. Additionally, there will have to be studies done by the oil companies before hole one is drilled. That is years away. In the Gulf, drilling couldn't begin until 2022. Where will alternative energy be by that date?? Will there still be the need to drill??"

will be Republicans flip-flopping all over themselves in their rush to disagree with the President.

The next most amusing thing will be Beck describing this new policy as Socialist - I put the over/under on that at 7 days.

7. Off of Virginia, they would still have to do environmental assessments, assessing it's impact on
tourism and military maneuvers, etc. People are acting like they start drilling next week. Not so. It is a long process, only looked at in some areas. We'll see how it plays out. It takes a wedge away from Republicans, provides cover for moderate Dems - especially in oil producing states - to support the comprehensive energy policy the WH is going to try to enact. He also said he was willing to do it during the campaign so it shouldn't come as a huge surprise.

He could propose something all the environmental groups love but it wouldn't be able to get through Congress. There are trade offs and compromises as usual.

17. The only problem with that strategy is when that middle ground is in Conservative territory
Then, the Republicans are forced to take an even more extreme stance than they normally would have. That strategy would be great if the Republicans' extreme stance were costing them anything.

What's happening is that the MSM is validating their extreme stance and painting Obama's middle ground as the "left." So at the end of the day, you've got Obama pushing conservative principles dressed up as the middle ground, the Republicans' extreme stance is validated, and liberals are left out in the cold wondering when the guy they voted for is going to show up.

:)

Hm. Its a big problem. While the right succeeds by pulling the spectrum further right, the Democrats work within whatever the existing confines are for success. There is rarely any force trying to educate the public from the left and move in that direction.

Alaska-Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia -

ALL republican governors in ALL red states. It's NOT like they Obama is opening up drilling in sensitive areas like ANWR that we are talking about here, there's already drilling in the Gulf & the Atlantic coast and off Alaska.....these are red states, they want oil drilling, they obviously vote republican and they want drilling & the majority of republicans are voters who want it...

Personally, I certainly don't want to see more off-shore drilling opened up in my state, California, nor in any other environmentally sensitive areas like ANWR and I KNOW I won't under Obama...

The drilling is off-shore of all red states, consensus is there's not much oil they haven't already found and already have been drilling for. "Drill Baby Drill" is republican politics because they want to drill everywhere even in most sensitive of areas.

How many Democratic Governors are in the those oil drilling states in question? - Alaska - Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia - ALL republican governors in ALL red states.

I believe it's political and Obama knows exactly what he's doing.

Obama's is pretty much shoving the off-shore oil drilling right down the republicans loud demanding throats off-shore in mostly republicans states, also Alaska another red state will see some drilling - but there are no plans to drill in The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and it will NOT be touched!

There's not much oil in most of these places such as FL as YOU state, so let the republicans and oil companies bitch...when they say there's no oil in these southern states....and when they want to open other more sensitive areas (and they will)... Obama can easily then say NO.

Of course republicans will always say "that's not enough, "we want more areas opened up".

Fuck that, Obama is NOT going to open up sensitive areas for drilling we gave you huge sections...We gave you republicans areas you wanted..."There's very little oil in those areas", too bad. Now shut the fuck up!

In republican red state areas, with all republican governors...who cares, let them eat shit, they are drilling all over those areas right now anyway, what's a few more?

And it WILL create JOBS!! (As well as more tax revenue)

“President Obama once again today reaffirmed his commitment to passing comprehensive energy and climate legislation. Controlled drilling in the purposed southern states areas will also help get the 60 votes necessary votes to pass energy and climate legislation.

I can see what Obama is doing very clearly...it is indeed a smart & necessary political move.

The purple state VA that voted for Obama in 08 will likely be a red state again due to Obama and some of his supporters throwing my entire family under the bus on every important issue.

Quite frankly I'm shifting from Obama is really not good for my family to Obama can go fuck himself.

37.  "Obama Closes Loophole That Allowed Drilling In Rockies Without Environmental Review "
Cross Post..LBN..

<snip>

"SALT LAKE CITY The Obama administration will limit the use of an administrative shortcut that hhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/31/rocky-mountain-drilling-l_n_520579.htmlas been used to approve thousands of drilling permits across the Rocky Mountains without full environmental reviews.

The policy change was reflected in the settlement late Tuesday of a lawsuit filed in Utah by environmental groups that challenged the Bush administration's interpretation of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

The act allows federal land managers to fast-track drilling permits without ordering an environmental assessment of the consequences.

The U.S. attorney's office in Salt Lake City confirmed Wednesday that the settlement will all but close the loophole used to approve thousands of oil and gas wells from 2006 to 2008."
