ADP Employment Data Casts Doubt On Jobs Rebound (23,000 jobs lost in March)

Mitchell Jaworski - AHN News Reporter

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Labor market worries flared up on Wednesday following a report by Automatic Data Processing that showed a decline in March payrolls, while an increase had been widely expected.

The ADP National Employment Report, which tracks payrolls in the private sector, showed a decrease of 23,000 for March. The downturn was an unwelcomed surprise as economists expected an increase of 40,000 jobs.

The report comes just two days before the Labor Department issues its March unemployment rate and nonfarm payrolls data. Economists are looking for an increase of 190,000 jobs for March, with the unemployment rate staying relatively steady in March. However, the ADP data has sparked some skepticism over those views.

Adding to the worries, the Chicago Purchasing Manager Index (PMI) declined in March to 58.8 following the rise in February to 62.6.

2. I'm somewhat hopeful
I thought we would see a large pickup in employment in the beginning of the year, but it looks like the the jobless recovery is continuing.

I think we will probably see a large pickup in the summer, but don't be surprised of companies continue to not hire people or hire slowly.

3. Those figures ignore service sector jobs...

.... which is where we've been growing. The service sector GAINED 28,000 in march. Add to the overall payroll an estimated 100,000 census bureau workers and you'll understand why the total figures for March are still expected to be huge.

I read two days ago that analysts are expected to see an INCREASE of 200,000 jobs total .... the largest increase in six years. But since it's not Friday yet and the reports not out, I felt it a bit premature to share the article. ;)

The White House still has an event planned for Friday in honor of the occasion. Read into that what you will.

4. I don't expect recovery this year at all...
From what I read... numbers will be mixed all year with no real net gains.
