5. Wow. I remember exactly where I was.

I was finishing up my junior year in high school and that evening was attending a class to become an umpire in a softball league. It was in the small city offices' basement in a Detroit suburb; somebody came down the steps and told us that King had been killed. I was by far the youngest there of all white males; the rest shrugged their shoulders, and one remarked that he was glad he was not in Detroit that night. I was stunned. I can still see the scene now.

He fought for peace, for equality and for the poor. And on this day, we must honor the peacemakers amongst us and condemn the warmongers which make this world a very chaotic and frightening place.


We haven't forgotten you and your sacrifice, Dr. King. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

9. I was on my way to visit my husband at Fort Polk, LA, where they were "training"

him for his Vietnam duty -- supposed to leave in June 1968 (which he did, and thankfully, returned in one piece)....

We were supposed to have a nice, romantic weekend (he had a weekend pass), but as soon as Dr. King was murdered, they closed all U.S. bases. My husband raced to the gates trying to get out before they noticed, but he couldn't. King was assassinated while I was in the air. I spent a couple of hours talking with the Red Cross on the phone, back and forth, and turned around and flew back to NY. Nothing could be done.

10. I was 11 years old watching Daniel Boone when news report

came on saying that Martin Luther King was shot, that's all I remember them saying.
