Will Obama speak at Blue Valley NW graduation?
Blue Valley Northwest High School has a chance to have President Obama as its commencement speaker this spring.
It was one of six schools across the country selected today as finalists in the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.
The White House and Department of Education chose the schools. The point of the competition was for schools to show how they are preparing students for college.
The overall goal is to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world, according to the White House.
Each finalist must now prepare a video of how it is meeting the challenge. The White House will post the videos on its website for the public to vote on the three best.
The president will select the winner and will speak at its spring graduation ceremonies.
“Public schools that encourage systemic reform and embrace effective approaches to teaching and learning help prepare America’s students to graduate ready for college and a career, and enable them to out-compete any worker, anywhere in the world,” Obama said when the competition was announced in February. “This is your opportunity to show me why your school exemplifies the best that our education system has to offer.”
