The Southern Republican Leadership Conference is not some ancient thing. For purposes of this observation, the question is does the Southern Republican Leadership Conference post-date 1957? I am guessing yes. (I think their first straw poll winner was Reagan. And 'southern republican' was an oxymoron until well after 1957.)
On February 14, 1957 Dr. Martin Luther King and other pro civil rights clergy joined to found the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference with the stated mission "to redeem the soul of America."
It was a storied organization throughout the history of the Civil Rights movement.
And this RW con-fab that the news breathlessly covers ever four years is, near as I can tell, named as some sort of intentional parody of/play on/disrespect of the SCLC.
It is as if the Republicans started a political action committee called the National Association for the Advancement of Conservative People.
But few would even note such a thing because a certain level of low imitation and recreational racial insult is simply expected of Republicans. Expected and accepted.
