With Website, Watchdog Group Sticks It To Right Wing Organization Behind High Court Ruling

A new website takes direct aim at the conservative organization whose name has become synonymous with the Supreme Court's decision to open the floodgates to corporate spending in elections.

A Washington public-interest watchdog group, Public Citizen on Monday launched the site CitizensUnitedAgainstCitizensUnited.org.

Headed by David Bossie, Citizens United is a right-wing educational organization that challenged limits on corporate spending due to a movie it had made about Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign. In January, the conservative bloc on the high court used its ruling in the case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, essentially to strike down decades of bipartisan legislation that had regulated corporate and labor union spending to influence elections.

The site urges visitors to take a stand against corporate influence in elections and calls for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court ruling. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) has promised to work for such an amendment, which is an arduous process which can take many years to complete.

Citizens United is gearing up to get involved in the upcoming campaign season; the organization recently sent out an e-mail with job descriptions for two documentary producers to make pieces leading up to the 2010 elections, according to Public Citizen.

“We’re already beginning to see the effects of Citizens United, with states throwing out restrictions on corporate election spending, the Chamber of Commerce stuffing its coffers to run election ads later this year, various political committees and advocacy groups clamoring for corporate contributions, and corporate insiders confirming that Citizens United signaled to business that there is no longer reason to exercise restraint in political spending,” Weissman says. “There's no time to waste in reasserting that our government must be of, by and for the people, not the corporations.”

In addition to giving the background as to its namesake, the new Web site also gives the history and context of both the Supreme Court case and Public Citizen’s stake in it.
