"Have they heard of the Oklahoma City bombing?"
'IS IT SCARY? IT SURE IS'....

Conservatives in at least one state inch just a little closer to pure, mid-19th-century madness.

Frustrated by recent political setbacks, tea party leaders and some conservative members of the Oklahoma Legislature say they would like to create a new volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.

Tea party movement leaders say they've discussed the idea with several supportive lawmakers and hope to get legislation next year to recognize a new volunteer force. They say the unit would not resemble militia groups that have been raided for allegedly plotting attacks on law enforcement officers.

"Is it scary? It sure is," said tea party leader Al Gerhart of Oklahoma City, who heads an umbrella group of tea party factions called the Oklahoma Constitutional Alliance. "But when do the states stop rolling over for the federal government?"

A constitutional law professor at the University of Oklahoma noted in response, "Have they heard of the Oklahoma City bombing?"

The discussions about this armed force that would apparently resist U.S. officials were described by the AP as "exploratory." That's the good news, I guess. The bad news is these discussions between right-wing extremists, including some in the state legislature, have actually happened.

Their vision, apparently, would be a privately-recruited militia, with the blessing of the state legislature, that would be armed and trained. Armed and trained by whom? The details are a little fuzzy.

1. there seems to be a rule against talking about OK City
I guess it's considered unfair since a lot of tea baggers sound exactly like Tim McVeigh.

Rachel Maddow however is doing a special on the anniversary, next Tue. I beleive.

4. Legislation in Oklahoma to teach students about Oklahoma City Bombing...
Signing of Legislation Ensures Oklahoma Students Will Learn About the April 19th Bombing Forever

They just signed a bill required students in Oklahoma to be taught about the Oklahoma City Bombing.

7. but WHAT will they be taught?
will they hear that McVeigh was a Right Wing American Terrorist?

will they hear that Waco was the triggering event, and that Koresh is NOT a martyr, but rather another Terrorist?

by most of the state. So I doubt they will teach that he was some sort of misunderstood warrior saint.

5. Would they want U.S. military bases to be moved from Oklahoma?
I'm sure some other states would be happy to accept them. ;-)

10. Then they would be in open rebellion to Federal authority.
Good luck with that one.

Just because one doesn't like what the Federal government does, mean that states have the right to ignore laws passed by that government.

Or organize an armed force to resist those laws.

Nullification didn't go over so well last time it was used.

Democrats lose elections, they organize, raise money, and go to the polls.

Republicans lose elections, they want an armed uprising against the government.

11. Where's Andrew Jackson when you need him?
Just try to nullify one federal law, and some volunteer militia types would be swinging from the highest trees.
