Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Richardson announced Monday morning that he is dropping out of the race after finding out he didn't qualify for Clean Election Act funding.
Richardson made the announcement during a news conference in his hometown of Brunswick. The state ethics commission determined Richardson campaign workers "falsely stated they collected qualifying contributions" and that the campaign submitted documents containing material false statements.
Richardson previously served in the Maine House of Representatives. He was also Speaker of the House.
There are four Democratic candidates left in the race: Steve Rowe, Rosa Scarcelli, Pat McGowan, and Elizabeth Mitchell.
