MSNBC reached a new shameful low tonight when Chris Matthews referred to West Point as an "enemy camp." He was trying to convey his surprise that Barack Obama would go to such a place, somewhere, he said, where Paul Wolfowitz would be more comfortable.

Chris, he's commander-in-chief.

The more outrageous, the more attention. The more attention, the higher his ratings. Don't ever expect him to be a realy "journalist" or you will be repeatedly disappointed.

7. Matthews got word of this article last night. On his 11pm Hardball show, he asked

Gen. Paul Eaton what HE thought the cadets thought of Obama and his speech, saying he was criticized for what he said about Obama entering enemy territory, and Eaton said they thought Obama was SO refreshing after the last admin., and that they were listening intently to what Obama had to say, appreciated it greatly, and then treated him like a rock star. Eaton was THERE. Matthews described the cadets as "stone-faced" and cool to Obama, and Eaton set him straight. It was so good to watch the exchange. It was as if Matthews couldn't believe what he was hearing from Eaton.

that I saw was certainly a surprise to me!

West Pointers were snapping his picture and shaking his hand and smiling amd reaching way out to try to touch him with their hands in a good way.

They seemed thrilled that he was there.

The military is on balance an extreme right-wing constituency. I speak from experience, having gotten out of the army in February, 2001--shortly after the disputed election of 2000. Hardly anyone would 'fess up to having voted for anyone but George W. Bush, certainly not in mixed company. Bill Clinton and Al Gore were openly hated and condemned as criminals and vote thieves, often with some lame caveat that "I respect the office of the commander-in-chief." A lot of liberals have a rather pitiful need to believe they're loved by the military; believe me, the military tend to be the sort of people you don't want to like you.
