A month out from the Democratic runoff in Alabama, Attorney Terri Sewell was sitting on a 20 point lead over Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Smoot in the 7th district, according to a new survey from Sewell's campaign.
Two weeks after capturing beating Smoot by 8 points in the June 1st primary, Sewell expanded her lead to 53 percent to Smoot's 33 percent. The survey of 400 likely runoff voters was conducted for Sewell's campaign by Anzalone Liszt Research June 13-16 and had a 4.9-point margin of error.
The poll indicates that some of Sewell's post-primary gains came from voters who supported the third-place finisher, state Rep. Earl Hilliard Jr. Sewell led 48 percent to 38 percent among voters who supported Hilliard.
Hilliard, the son of the district's former Congressman, has said he will not endorse in the July 13 runoff.
