Meister will oppose Heineman in governor's race

Scottsbluff attorney Mike Meister will be the Democratic Party's new gubernatorial nominee.

Meister said Sunday he's ready to step into the void left by the withdrawal of Mark Lakers and challenge Republican Gov. Dave Heineman's re-election.

The official announcement is scheduled for Monday at a news conference in Gering.

The Democratic Party is expected to formalize Meister's nomination at its state convention in Columbus on Saturday.

Meister, 49, a trial attorney who was the Democratic nominee for attorney general in 2002, said he will examine and contest Heineman's record as governor during what will be a contracted 100-day campaign.
