Former state GOP chairwoman Robin Smith, who is hoping to replace Rep. Zach Wamp (R) in Tennessee's 3rd district this fall, scored a high-profile endorsement today from former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R).
The Gingrich endorsement comes just days before Smith faces off against 10 other Republicans in the state's Aug. 5 primary.
Her biggest competition is attorney and former radio host Chuck Fleischmann (R), who has dropped nearly $600,000 of his own money into his Congressional bid.
Gingrich said in a release that Smith's "record of working for conservative causes and her historic leadership of the Tennessee Republican Party in 2008 make her uniquely suited to join other committed conservatives in meeting the challenges of our time."
