Sen. Michael Bennet has loaned himself $300,000 in the closing days of his primary contest against Andrew Romanoff. Romanoff sold his Denver home and cleared his personal savings to loan his campaign $325,000 in recent weeks—a last-ditch effort to try to knock off Bennet.
Romanoff's gamble was spent on television ads attacking the incumbent. A poll taken last week by KUSA-TV and The Denver Post shows Romanoff about even with Bennet in the Aug. 10 primary.
Bennet has a wide lead in overall fundraising. At the end of June, Bennet had raised $7.7 million to just under $2 million for Romanoff.
