Pennsylvania state Rep. Sam Rohrer lost the state’s Republican primary for governor to Attorney General Tom Corbett. But Rohrer’s supporters haven’t given up hope and have mounted a write-in campaign on behalf of the former candidate that could cause trouble for Corbett.
Rohrer, who lost the GOP primary by almost 40 percentage points and is barred from a third-party candidacy by Pennsylvania election laws, has said that he didn’t start the write-in effort. But he also hasn’t denounced it.
While the candidate isn’t encouraging his supporters to write his name down on their ballots, said Rohrer senior strategist Jeff Coleman, he “is not going to dissuade anybody from acting on principle.”
And if enough people vote for him “on principle,” he could potentially siphon enough votes from Corbett to affect the election outcome, said Terry Madonna, director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin and Marshall College.
