In an unusual gathering, a group of Democratic senators spanning the ideological spectrum of their party held a closed-door meeting Friday night to discuss their differences on the health care bill.
The meeting included both staunch supporters and skeptics of the public option: Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Russ Feingold (D-Wisc), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.).
"There's no question about that—this should have started a long time ago" Rockefeller said of the presence of members from both the center and left of the party. "Thankfully, Harry Reid caught it in time to put us together."
As senators exited the meeting room, they declined to provide details on their discussion, but Schumer said "good progress" was being made, light-heartedly adding that "good progress—it's like Good Lovin', you know, that song?"
