Alvin M. Greene, who came out of nowhere to win the Democratic Senate primary in South Carolina in June, was indicted Friday on two obscenity counts by a grand jury in Richland County, according to the state solicitor’s office.
The charges stem from accusations by a female student at the University of South Carolina that he had shown her pornography. The indictment will almost certainly complicate Mr. Greene’s already long-shot race against the Republican incumbent, Senator Jim DeMint, in November.
Mr. Greene has not entered a plea in the case and did not answer questions in a brief phone interview Friday.
“My lawyer is dealing with that, O.K., that’s all,” he said before hanging up. There was no answer at his lawyer’s office.
