DNC Raises $11.5M In July

The Democratic National Committee raised $11.5 million in the month of July and has nearly $11 million the bank with less than three months to go before the crucial midterm elections. TPM has learned that DNC Chairman Tim Kaine will announce the fundraising figures later today at the party's meeting in St. Louis.

A Democratic official offered an early preview: $11.5 million raised, $10.8 million cash on hand and $3.5 million in debt. It's the second best month of the cycle, and the official believes it will be the fifth consecutive month the DNC outraised the RNC.

Last month the DNC raised $6.5 million. The RNC raised $5.9 million.

The Democratic official also noted that the party already has moved $3.5 million to state parties to help them prepare for the fall election. The transfers are part of the DNC's plans to give $20 million out from its coffers to the campaign committees and states before the election.

The DNC will file their reports later this week. The RNC has not yet released its July numbers.

2. The RNC's numbers aren't a true indicator of what we are up against

Steele is considered a joke by most of his party's hierarchy already (not without good reason).

But with the SCOTUS ruling that any corporation can suddenly pump as much money as it desires into
our political process (see "Target," "Newscorp"), what the RNC raises is peanuts compared to what
we are really up against. So what if the DNC outraises the RNC by $20 million, or whatever the figure
turns out to be? If Karl Rove, Rupert Murdoch, Target, Big Oil, and whoever else is out there pumping
casual millions out of petty cash into Republican candidacies, whatever the DNC manages to raise, it
will be a penny to the far right's dollar.

If it were an even playing field, Democrats would wipe the floor with Republican candidates, and I don't
care HOW many people out there are pissed that Barack Obama has not yet cured cancer.

But the playing field has not been even for many years (see "Bush, George W."). That we have managed to
do as well as we have since 2006 is due largely to the two facts: 1.) that the Republicans screwed things
up to a point where even a good number of their own supporters got turned off, and 2.) that Howard Dean was
the most able and inspiring DNC chairman to come along in decades (and just at the right time, too). If the
two parties had equal resources, I'd bet that even under Kaine, we'd not only retain our majorities in both
Houses of Congress, but expand them. As it is, we will have to exhaust ourselves to retain those majorities,
although if I had to bet right now (and I'm not a bettin' man), I say we still retain them.

4. Isn't it crazy how Obama raised $150 million in one month..WOW!

It really shows how much people want change when they are willing to give $150 million in one month. I doubt we will see those same #s during the re-election though.
