A few months before the financial collapse, Ford has secured sufficient private financing so that it was not at threat of "near-term liquidity issues". Basically, they had enough cash on hand to survive without new loans.

With the financial collapse, GM and Chrystler could not secure similar private loans the way Ford had done.

This is what's been hurting small businesses. They often take short term loans to make payroll, etc. But if the bank won't lend you the money short term, you are toast.

This is partially why the Dems in congress are trying to pass legislation so that the government can grant loans to small businesses. The GOP is blocking that because they want those small businesses to go under.

But the suppliers Ford relies on wouldn't be able to survive with only one auto maker buying from them.
