Bloomberg to headline fundraiser for Reid

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) is set to host a fundraiser for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in September.

Ira Stoll has a copy of the invitation, which lists Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) as one of the guests. The event will take place in Bloomberg's home in New York Sept. 20. Tickets for the event start at $1,000 — raising $10,000 gets a donor billing as an event "chair."

Bloomberg and Reid are a bit of an odd pair, given that Reid recently broke with President Obama on his support for a planned Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero in New York. Reid became the most prominent Democrat to say the project should be built somewhere else.

Bloomberg is one of the project's strongest defenders and has assailed opponents of the plan. Earlier this month, he said those who spoke out against the project should be "ashamed."

1. Bloomberg's on the move.

His prospects as a national republican are now nil. His prospects for an independent run are still open... but not exactly promising. He's precluded from running for a fourth term as mayor and besides, being Mayor is getting old; and it's also HARD. Also he might very well lose, no matter how much he spends.

My guess is he's tiptoeing back ever so slightly to the left to position himself as a possible sub for Biden should the veep decide to take a powder in '12.

That would explain the Reid fundraiser, the pronouncements re. the Mosque and the obligatory " Bloomberg Denies Plans for 2012 Run" stories that appear mysteriously in various Bloomberg-friendly news venues in what appears to be an effort to "create a buzz", whenever he decides he wishes to do so.
