Eager to put a nasty primary campaign behind them, Republicans descended on Orlando on Monday for a political group hug designed to show voters that all is well in the state GOP.
Led by gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott, the meeting of about 200 people was a camera-ready rally to excite volunteers and push the narrative that Scott and the Republican establishment are joined at the hip and ready for battle.
"When you have a primary race, the most important thing you do is you unify the party afterward," said Scott, who was introduced by incoming House Speaker Dean Cannon of Winter Park and incoming Senate President Mike Haridopolos of Merritt Island. "We've got to unify the party, because we've got to make sure we win in November."
It was a curious scene given that the GOP leadership — including Cannon and Haridopolos — worked furiously to defeat Scott and convince primary voters that he was a shady businessman unfit to be governor.
