Mark Rees, who drew 4 percent of the vote in a seven-man Republican primary for the 3rd District congressional seat in June, today endorsed incumbent U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell, a Democrat.
Rees, a retired West Des Moines architect, said state Sen. Brad Zaun of Urbandale, who won the Republican primary, veers too far to the right “on all the issues.” He said that when he decided to run for Congress last year, it “had nothing to do with Leonard Boswell.” His goal was to step forward with ideas to help address national issues, he said.
Boswell, a seven-term congressman, is facing one of his toughest campaigns ever in the 3rd District, which covers 12 counties, including Polk County. Two recent polls by firms with links to Republicans have shown Zaun leading Boswell, although Boswell’s campaign staffers have dismissed the voter surveys as politically motivated.
Rees issued a statement praising Boswell, a retired military officer and former Iowa Senate president, for his “lifelong record of service to this state and our country.” He said he trusts Boswell to listen to his constituents and to place the public’s interest above partisan interests.
