My dear DU friends and family...those numbers are starting to go our way
This is good right?

Putting all dissension aside.. we all want the same thing, this and the numbers yesterday of people applying for unemployment (starting to get to the break even point) is good news.

While the number of unemployed increased, actual job offerings also increased in the private sector.. because more people are coming back into the job market.

Unfortunately just the way the numbers come in and are reported, we may not get the credit deserved before the November election..But with the media starting to show the uptick in actual jobs. and people starting to feel better about the economy in general.. it may help. I HOPE so.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Private employers hired more workers over the past three month than first thought, lifting hopes for the weak economy. But the unemployment rate rose in August for the first time in four months as more people entered the market looking for work.

Companies added a net total of 67,000 new jobs last month and both July and June's private-sector job figures were upwardly revised, the Labor Department said Friday.

Stock futures surged after the report was released. Wall Street analysts expected a smaller gain, according to Thomson Reuters.

1. Would employers downplay their data for the sake of "defeating" Obama?
In other words, they are hiring, making profits, and lying about it?

14. I don't think thats possible.
Not on any kind of significant scale anyway. The data is based on unemployment claims, paperwork filings for new employees to get setup to pay federal income tax and stuff like that. Unless employers were collectively trying to commit the biggest tax evasion scandal in history, I don't think thats the case.

3. or maybe not all that good
from the same article.

Overall, the economy lost 54,000 jobs as 114,000 temporary census positions came to an end. For the first time this year, the manufacturing sector lost jobs -- down a net total of 27,000 for the month. State and local governments shed 10,000 positions.

6. A lot of the govement job loss is the census.. that was going away anyway
but also (I am speaking from what I know in Iowa) a lot of government jobs are early retirees being offered packages.. and a family member is taking one of those packages..and their job will be opened up to a new hire at starting wage.

9. if that's true
then the numbers should in fact start looking up. however i just read where state and city governments, due to severe budget shortfalls are cutting police and firefighter positions along with teachers and EMTs.

11. Yep, I have read that also.. not all cities financial health is on an equal basis
We had 8 years of unfunded mandates to states that just broke them apart. Also in places like California, they have refused to increase their tax base for decades.. Boy that is a tough one then.

8. It won't help. People looking only at the overall numbers, and 9.6 is just
too high. No one cares that Republicans not only caused this mess, they deliberately sabotaging the economy. People are looking to blame someone, and they're going to kill us in November.

And then they'll get what they deserve.

10. I am hoping , hoping we can get that total picture out to people ..
Because if we get the republicans back in.. no matter how much we have started to dig out of the mess they had us in.. they will jump into the mud pit again.

Someone said yesterday, that generally people do not start paying attention to politics until after Labor Day.. and if that is true.. these numbers could help..

15. do you really think that employed people will base their vote on the unemployment rate??
sure, unemployed people will.

but I think many of those unemployed will tend to vote with those who have been extending their unemployment benefits.

I think it is the Media who are obsessed with the 9.6 number, not the public.

People will vote based on how they are doing for the most part.
Some may have been completely brainwashed by the MSM, but not most.

18. And 9.6 is the reported number, it doesn't take into account .............
those that have fallen off the tracking. Some people have had their benefits expire, others have just stopped looking. More than likely, the real number is somewhere in the low to mid teens.

19. The last budget the President submitted predicted unemployment to be 9.7 at years end...
.... and sorry I cant link to that but trust me .... they had to include what they expected the unemployment rate to be and it was around 9.7 ... def. no lower than 9.5

If they had predicted way lower or the rate had climbed WAY up, THEN I'd be worried.

But until then .... meh....
