Obama looks at new tax cuts to speed recovery
House considers tax breaks for business

By Anne E. Kornblut and Lori Montgomery

The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is weighing a package of business tax breaks — potentially worth hundreds of billions of dollars — to spur hiring and to combat Republican charges that Democratic tax policies hurt small businesses, according to people with knowledge of the deliberations.

Among the options under consideration are a temporary payroll-tax holiday and a permanent extension of the expired research-and-development tax credit, which rewards companies that conduct research into new technologies within the United States.

Administration officials have struggled to develop new economic policies and an effective message to blunt expected Republican gains in Congress in November's midterm elections.

Officials also are trying to defuse complaints from Democrats that President Obama is fumbling the issue most important to voters.

1. This is the part where we start to see the economy gain steam
Hold on tight, folks. We're gonna have a good 2011 and 2012. :)

Well, as long as the repukes don't take control of congress and put up job killing bills for a vote. Dear Lord, please don't let them take over!!

2. A Payroll Tax Holiday, Which Is Being Floated, Would Be Pretty Damn Good Stimulus

As well as tax breaks for new hiring.

And I would love the optics of the Repubs voting against tax breaks.

3. WTF!
is Chris van hollen talking about when he says we can make a deal with repubs but it can't be more than a year.

The repub on the show said yes we can make that deal. The repug was happy about making the deal because he thinks they are going to win and then they can continue the tax cuts forever.

What in the hell is wrong with these damn dems they are always being suckered in by the CONS lies or its something else..

5. pretty weak stuff
a payroll tax holiday for workers rather than business would be a far better stimulus to the economy and the R&D tax break gets extended every year anyway.

this amounts to little more than politicking

9. Was'nt taxcuts Bush's policy?
And Bush pushed for huge tax cuts without paying for them.
With the even bigger budget deficits currently, who will
pay for these Obama tax cuts?

10. SIGH
A payroll tax holiday for business doesn't create NEW HIRES. Payroll taxes are around 10->12% of the cost of an employee. If there isn't a reason to hire new people (demand for product or service) telling a business owner an employee will cost 10% less won't make them hire one!

However, a payroll tax holiday for WORKERS could create new hires, because it will increase people's paychecks by 10->12% and they will go out and SPEND THAT MONEY creating demand!

IF you want to do this, get rid of the bush tax cuts for those making over 250K... create a new rate for income over 2.5 million and 10 million and then institute an across the board payroll tax holiday for BOTH workers and individuals!

11. Just silly.
What does a small sign business with five employees do to get "research and development" tax credits? That's the stuff that ginormous corporations use to cut their taxes.

These silly efforts are indicative of the pandering to corporations. They call it help for small businesses, but the red tape and limited requirements make them available only to giant corporations.

You want to give a business tax break that will speed recovery, give breaks for hiring more people. Give breaks to companies who close foreign plants and bring the work back to America.

More words that won't help the economy or help the Democrats get elected. With one in eight un or under employed, you can't fool people with this shit. When they get jobs, good jobs, then you will get their support.
