Some pollsters do both (job approval and favorability) and favorability scores higher on average. The last Washington Post/ABC poll, for example, does favorability and job approval separate. While Obama's job approval average among all pollsters is currently 48.4%, his favorable rating is 52.7%.

Approval matters because people look to it to see what side they want to be on.

The "wrong side of history" argument is tougher to make to blue-dogs when the prez isn't polling well.

There is no valid way to compare their approval ratings right now because Palin is not (and heaven willing NEVER going to be) POTUS. She is not out there making tough choices about anything- just yapping her trap and biting Obama's ankles- just like the rest of the RW.
