Gibbs on White House messaging: 'Give us about 50 days'

The Obama administration thinks it can convince voters that Republicans would revive Bush-era policies between now and the election, press secretary Robert Gibbs suggested Friday.

Despite polling this week showing that voters are not convinced that electing GOP candidates would mean a return to policies sought by President George W. Bush — the crux of Democrats' election-year messaging — Gibbs hinted that the White House was not about to shift course.

"Give us about 50 days," he said during an appearance on MSNBC when asked about the efficacy of the Democratic message.

Gibbs asserted that the message would be driven home more throughout the fall election season, and that it hadn't struck home yet because voters hadn't fully tuned in yet to the political debates.

"I'm not sure everybody's been entirely focused on an election," he said.

President Obama will no doubt repeat that refrain, though, during an 11 a.m. press conference Friday to cap off a week of political barnstorming he's done in key battleground states.

The message matters, as does being on the offensive. The Republicans are masters at crafting catchy messages and attacking, repeating the same thing over and over until people accept it as fact. The Dems, for most of my lifetime, have sucked at this.

Perception is reality in elections.

5. This is as good as it gets

Guantanamo is still open, there's 50,000 troops still in Iraq, there's still DADT but no Employee Free Choice, and the stinking piles known as "Health Care" and "Derivatives" have been sprayed with air freshener. But lest you think that that fresh scent will linger, you better come out and vote, or else the evil Repubs will dump another truckload on you. We'd thank you for your vote, but that's not necessary, since we know you have no where else to go.

what are your alternatives? Dennis Kucinich? Yeah right, give us some solutions instead of complaining all the time. Look at what the President was dealt and everyone wants him to work magic, I just dont get it.

12. People are looking for answers.

The republican tea party has no answers - only some worn out talking points. The Orange Man's recently announced economic plan? Reduce taxes on the rich and slash regulations on banks and corporations. Same old shit, different day. The more people focus on the coming election, the more answers they should and will demand. The party of No has NO plans, NO answers, NO solutions. The only thing they have to sell is hate - and that they have plenty of.

13. They've gotten off to a solid start.

They've also received a gift issue in the form of Bush tax cut expirations if they'll only stake out a clear position and hold firm.

I'd love to hear Republican candidates explaining why they won't let anybody have a tax cut unless the very richest get one too. The R's have chosen a terrible battleground issue for the election; let's hope we have nerve to call their bluff and make it a defining question.

The voters have not been so much as giving a glance to the elections. The GOP summer assault was a waste for all but the consultants they paid and the media they bought from.
The only thing I don't agree with Robbie Cakes on is that he will have anything at all to do with our victories, he is making things harder, he is what we call 'stage weight'.

At least he kind of admits they have a messaging problem. The president and the white house have the loudest microphone on this country and they need to learn how to use it. If Obama continues to come out as strong as he did this week over the next 2 months, I can see some really good things happening in our favor. Obama needs to hammer his message home over and over until everyone in this country who pays even the smallest amount of attention to the news knows that, first off there is an important election in November, and two the republicans are running extremist psychopaths in major races all around the country. If he can make this election something people cant ignore and then cast Sharon Angle and Rand Paul as representative of the republican party, we will blow away peoples expectations for this election. I smell a comeback.
