Obama on Quran Burning: You "Don't Play Games" with Troop Safety
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20016074-503544.html

President Obama said today that his administration had an obligation to contact Rev. Terry Jones, the Florida pastor planning to hold a Quran burning, because his plans put troops overseas in danger.

"We've got an obligation to send a very clear message this kind of behavior threats of action puts our young men and women in harms way," Mr. Obama said at a White House press conference today.

(snip)
Mr. Obama also said today that he wants to "make sure we don't start having a bunch of folks across the country think this is a way to get attention."

He continued, "This is away of endangering our troops... who are sacrificing for us to keep us safe. You don't play games with that."

2. That will piss off Pat Buchanaan who was whining yesterday that Big Government didn't do enough
to step in and stop Rev. shithead.

Guess Pat gets to eat crow today now that he knows President Obama DID step in.

3. Why not Mr. President? The troops and the admin sure seem to
play games with the lives of innocent Iraqis and Afghanis?

4. Unless, of course, you're worried about Faux news calling you "weak on national security".
Then it's OK.

14. Remind me again why we escalated Afghanistan.
What specific goal are we trying to achieve there?

7. Amen.
Even if some Muslims are feeling invaded by Crusaders they are wrong to get violent over bigoted symbolism. But people like Jones who are attempting to ignite violence are even worse.

8. I feel the opposite
Being deliberately offensive and rude is wrong.

But becoming violent over offensive speech is even worse.

12. President Obama
was so awesome today when that Fox News reporter asked him about the Ground Zero Mosque, he gave such an intelligent and passioned answer. He makes me proud.

13. We find that republicans do....just look the only two
who did condemn it Beck and Palin, and Palin hooked it up to the Mosque. So where are all the Rushs, Hannitys, Demints, Boneheads, McConnels and all the others. Remember when they peed and moaned and ranted when some of the Democrats questioned some of the provisions of the Patriot Act. They screamed over and over....you are putting our troops in danger. Why - because they asked a sensible question. But what this guy is supposed to be changing his mind about and really doing, according especially to the General they love and defended when Move On made a statement about him, is really going to put the troops in danger. And the silence from tea bags, and republicans is so much so we could hear a tear drop.

16. Freedom of Speech is not a game.

What this boils down to is the difference between voluntarily refraining from burning Korans, and being prevented from doing so.

I'm quite happy not to exercise my right to burn the Koran, *provided* nobody challenges the fact that I could do so if I wanted.

At the point where burning the Koran is going to be met by the threat of mass violence, and by the President of the US telling you not to, I think we're straying from the former state of affairs into the latter.

I think that Obama and Gates make a far more compelling case for burning the Koran than Terry Jones does. Burning a book as a way of commenting on its contents is almost always morally wrong, I think, but burning a book because people threaten violence if you do is probably necessary.

17. And sending troops to invade countries and kill innocent people
has no effect on troop safety.

Gotcha.
