EPA Asks Drilling Companies To Disclose Chemicals Used In Fracking
By Susie Madrak

This is major good news from the Obama administration, and I'm glad to hear it. The natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale has the potential to contaminate drinking water for the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia metro watersheds:

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency asked nine natural gas companies Thursday to voluntarily disclose the chemical components used in a drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing.

The agency said the information is important to its study of the controversial drilling practice, also known as "fracking." Crews inject vast quantities of water, sand and chemicals underground to force open channels in sand and rock formations so oil and natural gas will flow.

The EPA is studying whether the practice affects drinking water and the public health.

Drilling companies have largely sought to protect their chemical formulas, calling them proprietary. Environmentalists are concerned that the chemicals, some of them carcinogens, will taint underground water supplies.

The EPA is taking a new look at fracking as gas drillers swarm to the lucrative Marcellus Shale region in the northeastern United States and blast into other shale formations around the country.

2. "Voluntarily"? This is a fucking joke.
The EPA needs to be the EPA of the 1970's and START HOLDING THESE FUCKERS ACCOUNTABLE! I'm literally SICK of being sick from the constant spraying of Corexit that is STILL going on down here. Didn't the EPA order BP to stop? No, I guess they just asked them to "volunteer" to end hhe practice of spraying and pumping lethal chemicals into our Gulf. :grr:

3. We need a good EPA intervention
because it's clear that corps won't hold themselves accountable and for the good health of everyone who would be affected by this adversely I say thank you EPA!

4. Alert the nation

I'm sure they give a crap about fracking, assuming they know what it is.

I think this is a "tree falls in the woods and no one's there to hear it" category.
