The White House, under pressure to do more on the jobs front, is projecting that the pace of stimulus spending will greatly accelerate over the next six months as last winter’s giant economic recovery package hits its stride.
Less than a third of the $787 billion has been spent to date, and the lion’s share of those funds has gone to pay for benefits for individuals or transfers to states to avert layoffs that would cut jobs for teachers or police, for example. But in the next two quarters, the diet will be much richer with the types of job-generating projects that lawmakers favor, and spending in this category should double according to numbers released Tuesday.
In the current quarter, for example, project related spending is expected to run between $10 billion and $12 billion, the White House estimates. By comparison, in the first quarter of 2010, project spending could reach $24 billion, and between April and June, outlays are projected at $28 billion to $32 billion.
"We’re just getting started,” a White House official said in response to POLITICO questions about Klain’s data. "In the coming months, we’ll launch more big bang-for-the-buck programs like broadband and high-speed rail and outlays for projects will double in the next two quarters."
