Republican says government shutdown is possible if GOP regains majority

<snip>
At least one Republican congressman has said a government shutdown is likely if his party regained the majority after November’s election.

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia told hundreds of supporters on Friday his party would pass spending bills President Obama would be likely to veto. Because the Republicans would not have enough votes to override the veto Congress could come to a halt, he said.

“If the government shuts down, we want you with us,” he told the crowd. “We have put Band-Aids on some things that need to be cleaned out. That is going to take some pain. There’s going to have to be some pain for us to do some things that we’ve got to do to right the ship.”

Westmoreland said a shutdown could temporarily close national parks or delay payments from the government. The last time the government shutdown was in 1995 under President Clinton.

10. All right, just as long as I don't have to use Netscape on dial-up and drive my old
1980s model Nissan Sentra, we're good.

4. That'll do wonders for global business confidence in American bonds.
Do these crackers want a wave of public sector defaults and capital flight by the multinationals? They can fire every Park Ranger and teacher in America, and there won't be enough in the Treasury to cover the higher payouts on federal bonds.

Westmoreland is clearly a genius. Super-genius.

11. It backfired on Newt and he has more political skills than Boehner.
But he also has no guts so I don't expect he will try this. Clinton played it into a big win in 1996.

12. They'll have a shutdown in order to try to cut government spending during a recession!
They'll ensure the further destruction of the economy, just as sure as the sun will rise.

14. During
Because everybody knows that's how to successfully run the country.

Honestly, I think the ploy will do them in. The crazies who want this a minority (but very vocal). The majority of real adults realize we are in dire straits and what action to fix things.

Many who are frustrated with Obama say it's because he hasn't done enough, not that he hasn't done anything.
