DE-SEN POLL: Teabagger O'Donnell 47, Castle 44 : In GE, Coons clocks O'Donnell, gains on Castle.

Too Close to Call in Delaware

It looks like there’s a real possibility of a major upset in the Delaware Senate primary on Tuesday night, with insurgent conservative Christine O’Donnell leading longtime Congressman and Governor Mike Castle 47-44. That 3 point lead is well within the poll’s margin of error.

If Castle is indeed defeated Tuesday night it will be yet another sign that conservatives have a strangle hold on the Republican Party and moderates may or may not be welcome anymore. Castle has an overwhelming 69-21 lead with moderate voters but they only make up 33% of the likely primary electorate. O’Donnell has a 62-31 lead with conservatives that’s more than enough to propel her to the overall lead.

It’s clear that Castle’s popularity has taken a sharp turn in the wrong direction over the last month. An August PPP poll found his favorability with Delaware Republicans at a 60/25 spread. Now his favorables within the party are negative at 43/47. That’s largely a product of 55% of voters in his party saying they think he’s too liberal compared to 37% who think he’s about right.

GOP voters are pretty sharply divided about O’Donnell as well. 45% have a favorable opinion of her with 41% seeing her unfavorably. Only 50% of primary voters think she’s fit to hold public office but she does much better than Castle on the ideology front- 53% think she’s about right.

PPP's teaser on the General Election: "GE numbers we'll release later show Coons clocking O'Donnell, closer to Castle than he has been"

1. Castle is toast
If O'Donnell has any sort of a lead now, I don't see Castle pulling it out. It doesn't take a whole lot of votes to win a primary in Delaware, less than 10,000 can do it.

17. It really is remarkable ...
It is just mindboggling, I mean, completely unimaginable, that REPEATEDLY, the Rs are nominating people who are the complete OPPOSITE of what you would want in public office - intellectually deficient, incompetent, CLEARLY and I mean totally not debatably, extremist in their views ...

It just seems the crazier and more cartoonish they are, the more they like them ...

I could get one or two Michele Bachmanns, but on such a large scale ...

Wow, just WOW ...

7. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she wins--if so, Dems keep DE
which nobody had predicted and along with a possible upset in Alaska I think Dems have a real shot at keeping the upper chamber. Now if we can only defeat Paul in KY, too.

Angle, Paul, Miller and now O'Donnel. We need to win all these seats and end the tea-party once and for all.

11. This is getting good.
And with only a couple days of campaigning left, too.

I would sure like to see Senator-Elect Coons this November.

12. Teabaggers are motivated to vote. They will show up on Tuesday
Castle's Country Club Republicans may or may not show up. It depends on whether or not they can make it after taking Tish and the kids to the country club for brunch.

14. How does Coons fare in a direct GE matchup?
I expect Para Sailin will be out to campaign for another of her proteges--and I'd expect Joltin' Joe Biden to do the same for Coons. Delaware is HIS house, dammit.

18. Rethugs may just give some seats back to us with their primary selections.
Coons could beat O'Donnell. She lost against Biden once already. Castle would be much closer.

20. I hate to be ageist but Castle looks old and tired to me. I think this may be working against him.
Even if he manages to pull it out, this is going to work against him in the GE I think. Also if this is indeed an anti-incumbent year, he comes across as being mostly like an incumbent in both the primary and the GE even though it is an open seat.

21. Well
If Castle loses the primary Biden's seat remains In Democratic Column.Castle was the only reason It was leaning pickup for Republican
despite the fact Castle since Obama has been In the white House has been voting like a COnservative Republican when he Is suspose to
be a moderate.Imagne on Election night and Reid winning reelection and both Obama and Biden seats have Democrats elected to them.
