AFL-CIO mail blankets battlegrounds

FIRST IN SCORE – LABOR UNLEASHED: The AFL-CIO is embarking on a massive political mail campaign this week, pumping more than 2 million mail pieces into six Senate races, four governor’s races and 26 campaigns for the House of Representatives. The labor giant will be sandwiching each mailer with two phone calls – one before the mail piece arrives and one after it arrives – for a total of more than 4 million live and automated calls. This is a major show of force and a tried-and-true method for the AFL-CIO to activate its members, who are likely to spend more time reading a mailer from their union than the voting public at large.

ALL THE DETAILS – IN THE SENATE: The mail assault goes after many of the GOP’s highest-value Senate candidates, attacking Republican nominees for their economic views in Nevada (“Nevada’s working families deserve better than Sharron Angle”), Pennsylvania, (“Anti-worker. Anti-retiree. Anti-union. We can’t trust Pat Toomey”), Missouri (“Roy Blunt thinks that the stock market crash is ‘a good thing’”), Wisconsin (“Millionaire CEO Ron Johnson: Wrong for working families”) and Florida (“Marco Rubio’s record: Fewer jobs, an uncertain future for workers.”) The AFL-CIO also attacks Illinois Senate candidate Mark Kirk on the issue of character: “Everyone knows he lied about his military record. And about being a teacher. AND IN THE HOUSE: AFL-CIO mailers will reach 23 House seats held by incumbent Democrats, mailing into the districts of Iowa Reps. Dave Loebsack and Leonard Boswell; Florida Reps. Allen Boyd, Alan Grayson, Ron Klein and Suzanne Kosmas; Illinois Reps. Debbie Halvorson, Bill Foster and Phil Hare; Indiana Rep. Joe Donnelly; Michigan Reps. Mark Schauer and Gary Peters; Nevada Rep. Dina Titus; Ohio Reps. Betty Sutton, Mary Jo Kilroy, John Boccieri and Zack Space; Pennsylvania Reps. Kathy Dahlkemper, Patrick Murphy, Chris Carney and Mark Critz; Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly and West Virginia Rep. Nick Rahall. The union campaign will also hit the Democrat-held open seat in Arkansas’s 2nd District, as well as two takeover prospects: The Republican-held open seat in Illinois’s 10th District and the Hawaii House seat of GOP Rep.
