Delaware Senate race moved to Lean Democrat
Stuart Rothenberg

September 14, 2010 · 9:33 PM EDT

Christine O’Donnell’s upset over Cong Mike Castle in the GOP primary dramatically alters Republican prospects for November in Delaware. Castle had broad appeal, including to independents and even Democratic voters, while O’Donnell’s appeal is limited to tea party conservatives. Lacking an impressive resume and unlikely to garner significant national Republican support, O’Donnell clearly looks like an underdog against New Castle County Executive Chris Coons (D), who is suddenly transformed to the favorite in the general election.

While tea party activists are jumping for joy at the primary results, it’s Democrats who will have the last laugh in Delaware.

2. I think the repugs are getting nervous
they know we're going to hold the Senate - which means we still control judicial nominations.

3. If it were a Liberal, progressive Democrat winning the primary the tea partiers
would be jumping for joy.

We absolutely disagree with them and what they stand for, but the tea partiers are trying to move their party in the direction they believe it should go. They may fail more than they succeed initially, but maybe that will eventually turn around. They tried though.

How many here would want to see Liberal and Progressive Democrats winning primaries in places where they would likely lose in the general elections, but you need to start somewhere and just because you don't have immediate victories doesn't make the goal not worthwhile. In that case it would be the Republicans who would be dancing and celebrating because they believed the Democrats were stupid to pick such Liberal candidates.

I wouldn't laugh too hard yet about the success of the Tea Partiers. The time may come when they have the last laugh.

7. Not if we vote in large numbers this November.
If the Dems were smart (which we tend not to be) we'd vote big this election.

Another round of loses would split the GOP in half.

8. I didn't mean they would have the last laugh in this election, but in the future.
Now they win a few primaries, but lose in the general. Eventually they get some wins--maybe some mayors, state legislatures, governor, or the occasional congressional seat which requires a smaller voting population. As time goes by they win some more. The time might come when they offer some serious opposition and they won't be a joke anymore, however ridiculous their beliefs may be.

In the Democratic Party, if the Progressives and Liberals really want to get rid of the DINOs and Blue Dogs, they have to risk losing some seats. Getting a progressive into the general election does not mean they will win, that enough of the voters might consider them to be too far to the left. But eventually if there is really any chance of acceptance of the progressive views by the voters there will be successes and candidates will get elected.

Or perhaps the whole tea party thing will fizzle out, but I still would rather not underestimate them if the movement lasts.
