Senator Bernie Sanders asks his supporters to contribute to Russ Feingold's one-day 'Cheddarbomb.'
Edited on Wed Sep-15-10 07:59 AM by flpoljunkie
Dear Friend,

My good friend Senator Russ Feingold is one of the most progressive members in Congress. Now, he finds himself in a tough re-election fight against a very wealthy opponent. I wanted to take this opportunuity to share with you a message that he recently sent out to my campaign supporters. I hope very much that you can help Russ.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings Friends of Bernie Sanders,
All the polls show this race is a toss-up and I expect it to remain tight until Election Day.
My opponent, multimillionaire Ron Johnson, thinks his checkbook can decide this election. He’s so confident about winning that he's already pledged to spend upward of $15 million of his own fortune, or “all of it,” to win.
Today, September 15, my campaign is launching our newest effort: “15 for 15 Cheddarbomb.” We'll match Ron Johnson's $15 million with the donations of 15,000 grassroots donors. This is our first-ever “moneybomb” or as we call it in Wisconsin – a “Cheddarbomb.” Our “Cheddarbomb” will show that my campaign can match Johnson's $15 million with 15,000 grassroots donations of our own – in a single day.
Contribute to our September 15 https://secure3.convio.net/fsc10/site/Donation2?df_id=5486&5486.donation=form1&JServSessionIdr004=56im2z86s7.app333a">“Cheddarbomb” right now.
Our goal of 15,000 grassroots supporters is a pretty ambitious one-day goal, but my campaign is built on grassroots support, not on the support of Washington corporate interests. The only way to win this election is by having the strongest grassroots support and the absolute best ground operation. My campaign has already contacted 228,696 Wisconsin voters and opened 22 field offices across the state. The momentum is on our side. We'll win because we have the best volunteers and supporters, not because we rely on special interests and big checkbooks to help us win.
In fact, in just the past three months, Johnson has already spent $4 million on slash-and-burn television ads. Ron Johnson has millions of dollars to spend on attack ads, but you have a voice and it needs to be heard. That's why I need your help right now.
This is the first time a one-day online fundraising campaign has ever been attempted in Wisconsin campaign history. I hope you'll make this “Cheddarbomb” a success by standing up with me today!
Ron Johnson and the extremists want to win this election bad. They want to gut Social Security, roll back health care, and hand over our economy to the Wall Street profiteers who got us into this mess in the first place.
I'm extremely proud of my record and I hope you are too. I've spent the last 18 years protecting and creating jobs in Wisconsin, creating legislation to help our veterans, and helping small businesses grow. And do you know something else I'm proud of? Every election, I've relied on grassroots support – not corporate special interest support – to win in Wisconsin. This race is no different.
This election is in your hands. Don't let Ron Johnson and corporate special interests in Washington take it away.
Please contribute to my campaign's https://secure3.convio.net/fsc10/site/Donation2?df_id=5486&5486.donation=form1&JServSessionIdr004=56im2z86s7.app333a">“15 for 15 Cheddarbomb” right now and help us reach our goal of 15,000 grassroots donors by midnight tonight.
Thanks for standing with me.
Sincerely,
Russ Feingold
United States Senator
1. From the Milwaukee Journal on Feingold's opponent who thinks 'sunspots are behind climate change'
Johnson handily wins, will take on Feingold
Only a few months ago, Ron Johnson was an unknown in the political world.
Now after an easy victory in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, Johnson has a matchup in November with U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) in what already has become a tight and contentious race.
"This is a fight for our economic future and our fundamental freedom, and it is a fight we must absolutely win," Johnson told cheering supporters at an Oshkosh hotel.
Johnson handily defeated his two Republican challengers: Dave Westlake, a Watertown businessman, and Stephen Finn, a Milwaukee plumber.
Johnson said he was looking forward to debating Feingold "in comparing my record to his." Asked whether he would attend a scheduled debate in Eau Claire on Sunday night, Johnson said, "I don't believe so. That's pretty quick."
One that gained Johnson national attention was the issue of climate change.
In a meeting with the Journal Sentinel Editorial Board, Johnson said sunspots were behind climate change and said manmade climate change could not be proved.
Here was his full comment: "I absolutely do not believe that the science of man-caused climate change is proven. Not by any stretch of the imagination. I think it's far more likely that it's just sunspot activity or something just in the geologic eons of time where we have changes in the climate."
He added: "We would just penalize our economy tremendously and for the state of Wisconsin it would be extremely harmful."
Johnson said his comments were part of his argument that passing legislation such as cap and trade would raise taxes and put people out of work.
Johnson also was on the defensive on the issue of drilling for oil in the Great Lakes. Johnson left the impression, which he later clarified, that he did not oppose drilling in the Great Lakes. But then he came out against it when Feingold called him on it.
Later, in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio, Johnson made reference to casino mogul Steve Wynn, who does business in China and commented in a YouTube video that the climate for business investment is far more certain in China than in the United States.
Johnson's opponents leaped on the comment - saying it implied Johnson favored a government managed economy. Johnson said his comments were taken out of context. Johnson said Wynn's point was that "the climate for business investment is far more certain in Communist China than it is in the U.S. here."
In the general election, Johnson is expected to spend more on ads to attack Feingold. The latest campaign reports show Johnson has raised about $1.8 million so far and has lent himself $4.4 million.
In his ads and in public statements, Johnson has accused Feingold of being a career politician and criticized him for supporting the economic stimulus law, which Johnson has called a failure, and voting in favor of the health care law. Johnson has vowed to try to repeal the health care law if he is elected.
2. Senator Sherrod Brown is also asking supporters to contribute to Feingold's 'Cheddarbomb.'
Ohio's Sherrod Brown is also one of my favorite Democratic senators.
I do hope that Senator Feingold reaches his goal of 15,000 contributors--or better yet, exceeds it.
