A local tea party parade float featuring a man in a Barack Obama mask whipping a fellow marcher is drawing national attention.
The float was sponsored by a group named “Remember Us…We the People” and was part of Saturday’s annual Naches Sportsmans’ Days parade in Yakima, Wash.
Sitting behind the man playing Obama were tea party activists holding signs reading “ObamaCare,” “AIG” and “Health Care Takeover.” The Yakima Herald-Republic first reported on the float.
A video of the float has gone viral on YouTube and is drawing the attention of liberal bloggers who are highlighting complaints from residents that the float was “over the top.”
Think Progress, a blog run by the liberal Center for American Progress, suggested that the float sent a racially motivated message with its headline.
“Tea party float depicts Obama whipping a white ‘future tax payer’ pulling a wagon,” read the headline, which picked up on some of the complaints of Yakima residents calling the float racist.
The Herald-Republic reported however that James Parks, president of the Yakima County NAACP chapter, did not find the float to be racist, only “sad.”
“A lot of people will see it in different ways. I don't see it as being racist,” he said.
The Naches Lions Club sponsored the Sportsmans’ Days event.
