Sen. Chuck Schumer has given $2 million to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and top Senate Democrats are leaning hard on their colleagues to cough up more as the embattled majority looks to save vulnerable incumbents.
The New York Democrat cut a $1 million check to the DSCC on Aug. 3, according to federal campaign disclosure reports, and DSCC Chairman Robert Menendez of New Jersey said Schumer gave another $1 million on Tuesday.
“He will have given $2 million in the last couple months,” Menendez told POLITICO. “It will put him at the top of the list. I’m thrilled at his example, and I hope others will emulate it.”
Schumer also gave $25,000 to the New York State Democratic Committee in August, according to Federal Election Commission records.
That kind of war chest puts his campaign in the same league as the DSCC itself, as well as bolsters his ability to help fund his fellow Democrats and boost his own standing within the Senate Democratic Caucus.
Schumer has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) if Reid loses his tough reelection battle this fall. However, Schumer and his aides say his only concern is helping Reid and other Democrats win
