Obama should threaten to veto any bill that gives tax cuts to top 2%
Edited on Wed Sep-15-10 08:48 PM by rhombus
Just put a stop to all the GOP 'extension compromise' talk. We can't afford any more tax cuts for the ultra wealthy with our deficits so high.

You have to draw a clear line to show you mean business.

1. Maybe this is part of the chess game people talk about..?
Sometimes the stew needs to sit on the stove a little longer, until everyone gets a smell of what's cooking...? Know what I mean? :-)

2. Not the way it's turning out
The GOP is trying to divide and conquer wavering Dems. If Pres Obama came out tomorrow and said he'd veto any bill with tax cuts for the rich, all this nonsense from the GOP will end quick.

Right now, the GOP wants to call Obama's bluff. Obama should show them he's serious. Veto threat means business.

3. Fine. As long as he doesn't actually do it.
If taxes end up rising on EVERYONE, Obama and the Dems would have the blame heaped on them, both by Rethugs and the media. It wouldn't matter that Dems would have preferred a better bill -- if Obama vetoes this and nothing's put in its place, Obama will get all the blame.

4. I don't think so
The media and the country will blame the GOP for holding widely popular tax cuts for the middle class hostage.

This is why Obama has to announce a veto threat now, and push for a standalone middle class tax cut bill, and dare the GOP to oppose it.

5. I said the same yesterday when the 'let Pelosi deal with it' came out
and got called a few names by a couple of the usual folks.

No matter how hard I tried to point out that Obama's job is to oversee anything Congress does, and veto anything that he disagrees with, they wouldnt accept that Obama should tell them what he will accept.

Oh well.

7. He wont threaten it because he WON'T VETO it.
Edited on Wed Sep-15-10 10:05 PM by denimgirly
We've seen this before with the public option...he never came out in support of it and was actually working behind the scenes to kill it.

The same is true here where he won't come out to say he'd veto it simply because if it is on his table he will most certainly sign it into law. My guess is though he is hoping he doesnt get it but if it does happen he will sign it and not veto it. WHICH SUCKS!!

Draw the line in the same is the correct thing but this is Obama so don't expect it.
