Elizabeth Warren Didn't Want Permanent Appointment To CFPB: Frank
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/16/warren-didnt-want-permane_n_719932.html

Ryan Grim
ryan@huffingtonpost.com | HuffPost Reporting

Elizabeth Warren made it clear to the White House while it was debating her nomination to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that she was not interested in a five-year term to run the agency. Barney Frank, a Warren ally, delivered that message to the White House, he told HuffPost in an interview Thursday.

"She always said she didn't want to be there as a permanent director. Some of the liberals are worried about it. It's almost an insult to Elizabeth. She wouldn't take this if there was the slightest impediment to her doing the job," he said.

An administration official said that Warren will be officially named on Friday as an "assistant to the president," the same title that Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and other top officials hold, as well as a special adviser to the Treasury, overseeing the establishment of the CFPB.

There were extensive and nuanced discussions with the White House, said a source familiar with them, and the interim nomination emerged as her favored choice, as Frank says, but she has still not foreclosed the option of a full nomination or told the administration that she would flatly refuse one.

"A Home Run for Our Side!" Open Left's Mike Lux has positive take on Warren Appt.

(Since Mike Lux is a Lobbyist for Progressives and was part of Obama/Biden Transition Team...I'll take him at his word that the Warren Compromise is a good thing. I was critical of the announcement since I thought it was "Window Dressing" and Warren would be under Geithner's thumb. Lux says it's not "window dressing" and he's been pretty good with his observations on progressive actions or non actions by this Admin., so far)

A home run for our side
by: Mike Lux
Thu Sep 16, 2010 at 10:31

I have beaten up on the Obama White House enough that I'm no longer very welcome by many of the top staffers there, and on no issue have I been tougher on them than on their policies regarding dealing with the biggest banks and the TARP program. This morning, though, I am all smiles, delighted to my core, because the reports, confirmed multiple times, about the appointment of Elizabeth Warren are a big home run.

108. I just mean the public isn't paying attention to all the "inside baseball" politics.
Most people look at this and think "hey, the President appointed someone to do something". They won't even bother to see what that agency even does. I think we all let our own obsession with politics cloud our judgement when it comes to gauging what the general populace is thinking or worrying about.

Announcements are made when announcements are ready. Decisions are made by all sorts of people when they have the facts they need to make them. Your desire to have that processed hurried is not really much of a concern. If you want a hand in making decisions, now's the time to start thinking about running for office in 2012.

32. Put the liberal base on speed dial. You guys kill me.
Maybe the Obama admin got a kick out of seeing you guys make a fool of yourselves while they hash out the details. This is what happens when people run on little information but think they know it all. Sometimes we're not privy to what's going on in the White House.

On a final note...you do know that Elizabeth Warren is bound to a code so it's like she can disclose information until everything is finalized and allowed to be public.

27. Further proof, as if it is needed, that she is one very smart woman...
doing it this way, Ms. Warren has the power to set up the agency she wants the way she envisioned it when she first championed it and that is key, imo. She will get the job done and then decide whether she wishes to stand for nomination or move on to other interests.

Thanks for posting this, it is much appreciated.

running cover for an evil and corrupt White House. On a serious note, it's probably healthy to have some skepticism after the Bush years, but what we're witnessing here at DU is a derangement of sorts. And I gotta tell you, some of my "progressive" allies have begun to scare me just a bit, provided they are who they say they are. Although, anything's possible on the internetz. :scared:

Elizabeth Warren knows precisely what she is doing.

And, either way she wins.

Let's say that Frank is right and these were her terms. She is free to go and say what she wants about her experience in the White House if things do not go well.

Let's say that Frank is wrong and these terms were imposed on her. She can call the bluff of those in both parties that refused to support her for the real deal and through confirmation by winning the support of the American people for her efforts.

As I said, either way, Elizabeth Warren wins this one hands down.

She's supposed to implement an enormously important new agency, yet is not supposed to have the intelligence and presence of mind to speak up for herself every step along the way.

That really is insulting when thinking about it.

The right-wing (including corporatist DLCers) are very Orwellian like that.

64. I sure hope that's not going on here. Because she's terrific and this is just wonderful.
I still remember discovering her on PBS's NOW, when it was first hosted by Bill Moyers, and thinking, "Wow, we need her in government, but it will never happen."

Well, never say never! The day is here!

67. Assuming this is true, it is a wise move on Elizabeth Warren's part.
She takes the job, but does not lose her job at Harvard. This insures that she will have the independence to say what she believes is right. She can leave her post more easily if she is not treated correctly by others in the administration.

69. So Warren couldn't tell her close friend Obama she didn't want the job and had to use Barney Frank

to let Obama know her intentions.

Sure.

Of course.

I'll buy that.

Anyone want to sell me a nice bridge in Brooklyn or some tower in Paris?

71. Why don't you read her own words?:
Edited on Fri Sep-17-10 02:03 PM by jenmito
"Over the past several weeks, the President and I have had extensive conversations about the vital importance of consumer financial protection.

The President asked me, and I enthusiastically agreed, to serve as an Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He has also asked me to take on the job to get the new CFPB started—right now. The President and I are committed to the same vision on CFPB, and I am confident that I will have the tools I need to get the job done..."

Edited on Fri Sep-17-10 01:49 PM by Better Believe It

"Elizabeth Warren made it clear to the White House while it was debating her nomination to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that she was not interested in a five-year term to run the agency. Barney Frank, a Warren ally, delivered that message to the White House, he told HuffPost in an interview Thursday."

94. I guess if I tell one sister to tell another sister something, then
that means we're not really sisters. I've been doing that my entire life. Like, "Alice, will you tell Sandy that I'll be late to the party tonight?" I guess Sandy's not my sister. Who knew?

105. To be quite frank, you are not in a position to know what she told
Obama or Barney Frank. You are a minor player on an internet discussion forum (or maybe more than one). That is all. I'm in exactly the same position. Elizabeth Warren owes you no explanation of anything. She makes her own career choices without our input. Do you truly believe that you are owed something from her? Truly?

What is truly fascinating to me is that so many people kept claiming that she'd never be appointed to anything, and that President Obama would punt. Now that she IS appointed, the same people turn on her as though she betrayed them. How very strange! I can't think of any reason for such a turnabout...well...actually I can, but I won't voice my thoughts. I'm not important enough to matter in such affairs.

I'm so pleased that Warren has this appointment. I did not know how this would go. It seems to have gone in a very good direction. I would think that all liberals and progressives would be shouting in praise of this wise decision by President Obama. Apparently, that is not to be, and so be it.

Edited on Fri Sep-17-10 05:06 PM by ClarkUSA
Gee, what are the odds that an anonymous blogger would know more than Senator Barney Frank about Elizabeth Warren? :eyes:

Fact check (quoted from the OP):

"she has still not foreclosed the option of a full nomination or told the administration that she would flatly refuse one"

102. You just can't let this go, can you? You don't seem able to
accept that people have reasons to want the job of creating an agency, but don't want to run it for five years. Makes perfect sense to me, and it's Elizabeth Warren's decision, isn't it. Do you really suppose that she cares what some random DUer thinks about her decision? Now, that seems very unlikely.

If you're trying to build controversy, you've succeeded. If you're trying to promote progressive goals, you have failed.

Seeya!

107. I don't know. You don't know. I imagine that even President Obama
doesn't know at this point. When the time comes to make that decision, I'm sure he'll call you up to make sure his choice meets with your approval, though. You've been such a supporter of President Obama, after all. Perhaps he'll even ask for your advice.
