Gibbs tweets denial of FLOTUS 'hell' comment
By Elise Viebeck - 09/16/10

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs weighed in Thursday on the controversy surrounding a remark allegedly made by Michelle Obama that her life was "hell," which surfaced in a biography of France's first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

"French spokesman says 'The words attributed to the First Lady of the United States were never said,' " Gibbs tweeted, linking to a news report saying Michelle Obama denied making the remark.

Bruni-Sarkozy, who reportedly collaborated on the book Carla and the Ambitious, is described as having asked Obama how she is enjoying her time as first lady.

"Don't ask. It's hell. I can't stand it," Obama is said to have replied.

Michelle Obama's office also sharply denied the story Thursday.

"Mrs. Obama's spokeswoman, Catherine McCormick-Lelyveld, tells CNN: 'The first lady never said that,' " the network reported.

1. He is no longer
credible, and at this time is not serving President Obama well.

IMHO, it is time for the President to start considering, if he is not already, the identitiy of Mr Gibbs' replacement.

It happens. Mr Gibbs needs to make plans for moving on.

2. Huh? Why isn't this credible? Mrs. Obama said it wasn't; he
reiterated that.

3. I lived in DC for years. Press Secretaries last for about two years.
And they usually burn out before then. As Mr Gibbs is. At first, it is little things, like now.

Call me cynical. It's OK. But the signs are beginning to show up.

I'd be happy to be wrong about this. But I'm not ....

4. What did he say that was incorrect? I'm still not getting your
point, if you have one other than a generic 'he needs to go'.

5. Oh. I'm sorry. I misunderstood your question. Google
Edited on Thu Sep-16-10 07:47 PM by Moondog
the reports on the content of Ms Bruni's (Mme Sarkozi's) recent book. From whence the assertions about Michelle Obama's unhappiness about her current circumstances originate. We all have to judge for ourselves, but I find Ms Bruni's assertions to be credible.

On edit - OK, I haven't been paying as close attention as I should. I find Mr Gibbs' denials, on behalf of Ms Obama, to be lacking in ... I don't know, enough "oomph" to really convince anyone. Which is what I am seeing as evidence of him being crispy around the edges. One of the first signs of burn-out.

Whether you agree with me or not, does that make more sense?

7. Did you miss this?

French Embassy spokesman Emmanuel Lenain says a book's claim that first lady Michelle Obama told French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy that life in the White House is "hell" is false.

"Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy distances herself completely from the content of the book 'Carla and the Ambitious,' which was not authorized and the authors alone are responsible for its contents," Lenain, spokesman at the French embassy in Washington DC, said. "The words attributed to the First Lady of the United States were never said."

Maybe this has something to do with Gibbs' denials?

19. I was speaking in general. And still he wasn't very convincing. He's just a bad spokesman.
Great during the elections. Horrible as Press Secretary.
