Saturday: Canvass for local and statewide candidates and talk to low efficacy Dem and indy voters about education, jobs, and renewable energy in AZ.

Sunday: Canvass for legislative and Congressional candidates and talk to Dems, indies, and voters ID'd as possible "soft Rs" about mostly the same stuff. Plus the opponent is Ben Quayle. In the evening I'll be at a strategy meeting for another statewide candidate.

This Professional Leftist/whiner/pony wanter will be working to get Dems elected in possibly the toughest environment for Dems in the nation, Arizona.

I drive they get out and put them in. We've been doing this for a long time now, every election since they were in strollers and backpacks and now they are in their twenties. One son is on our Dem committee with me. One thing I feel proudest about is raising two good liberal sons.

13. I was asked by OFA to come out to a suburb ...

because (gasp) Glenn Beck, of all people, was coming to bring his dog and pony show to the Chicago area this weekend and they wanted to have a protest presence there. They knew I'd shown up for other activities (canvassing, phone banking, visibility at the far-suburban office of Melissa Bean to pressure her on her health-care vote), and wondered if I could do it again. I had to inform her Saturday was Yom Kippur, and I just couldn't do it. She sighed, as if I were the fifth Jew in a row she'd just called.

Next week!

Our job here in the city is less to convince voters of WHO to vote for, but rather to get people to come to the polls at all. If they come, they'll vote for the Democrats. And we need all the urban folk possible to do that to offset the more conservative suburban and way conservative rural voters.

15. Here in AZ our two Dem-heavy Congressional districts have the lowest turnout in the country.

Seriously. CD 4 (Ed Pastor) and CD 7 (Raul Grijalva) are tied for lowest voter turnout in the country. In 2008 Pastor's district had a 54% turnout for the general election, with Barack Obama at the top of the ticket. If our Dems would get out to vote we'd have a fighting chance at winning some statewide races because the electorate is almost evenly split between GOP, Dem, and independent. We're a "red" state mostly due to gerrymandering of the legislative districts and Dem voter apathy. But we've managed to pass some pretty dang progressive initiatives like expanded Medicaid and early childhood programs.

16. Here, people think the machine will just take care of things

That's true at a local level (alas), with some exceptions. In the city, the Democrats are going to win no matter what. (Which Democrats is another story.) But the governor's race and the senate seat (Obama's old seat) are not sure things at all. This is an election where people who normally don't vote in midterms have to understand what is at stake--that it really counts this time. If we can get the first time voters who came out in 2008 to the polls again, there is some hope. Fortunately, the black community is extremely active in politics here, and mobilizing the communities is where the action will be.
