ODonnell.
Every week there's a new talking point that is intensely repeated throughout the country. Each one is false on it's face, but contributes to an overall picture that whips up the base, helps with fundraising, keeps the fear and hate alive, and elects otherwise unelectable candidates.
This is a coordinated effort tried out on Hannity and Levin and lesser known RW shows in the midwest and, if halfway workable, the meme trickles up to other pundits, msm, and even to gop leaders. These talking points don't just stay on fringe radio shows...the amazing thing is that they often end up on Meet the Press or CNN and on the floor of congress (Which former gop congressman refused to catapult the propaganda with teabaggers and was defeated and talked about pressure to peddle this stuff?). On talk shows, experts and pundits are brought in to legitimize the meme, discuss endless aspects of the issue, and repeat it over and over.
Week after week they are infecting public opinion such that half of republicans believe Obama is a muslim, or that the Obamas are taking an unprecedented amount of vacation time and flying in chefs to entertain themselves and their San Francisco friends, or that bills are introduced requiring proof of citizenship in elections. By the same tools, I think a majority of republicans still believe Iraq had something to do with 9/11. In no small measure, I believe these are responsible for low approvals and for the enthusiasm gap. It is propaganda and undemocratic. It is deliberate pollution of the process, not valid discussion of differing opinions.
It's like the list of weekly outrages of the Bush administration...after a while, you're so constantly amazed at the unprecedented boldness and scope of the misdeeds that fatigue sets in. You can't keep up....you forget last week's talking point. The list of Obama memes is so long and ridiculous that fighting them off each week is wearing and diminishes over months. But when you see them in one place, it is easier to make the case that the gop is manipulating it's base with lies. I think the list ought to be part of dem campaigns to point out who's serious and who's not.
I offer the following incomplete list of ridiculousness...PLEASE ADD MORE THAT YOU REMEMBER:
...Refusal to wear lapel pin is proof of unpatriotic character
...Can't speak without a teleprompter
...Terrorist fist jab (classic illustration of the point)
...Deliberately flubbed his POTUS swearing in at inauguration
...Unprecedented use of communist type czars in government (this one persists)
...Won't cover heart with hand during national anthem
...His foreign trips are not diplomacy but an apology tour
...He could be the anti-christ (something like 17% of republicans believe this one)
...He bows to foreign leaders and undermines US power
...His Kenyan anti-colonial attitudes threaten our foreign policy (all-timer)
...He was raised in infancy by the CIA to become president (heard this one in CA central valley)
...He's a the most extreme radical leftist president in American history (also in central valley)
...He's a socialist (daily), marxist, corporate communist (don't understand that one)
...He removed an american flag from Air Force One...he changed the location of "In God We Trust" on coins (Palin?)
...He's not a legitimate citizen.
...He is a muslim (more than half of republicans believe this)
...His willingness to talk to Iran without preconditions is empowering our enemies
...His justice department practices reverse racism (new black panthers)
...First president to have services for national prayer day (something like that...)
...He's open to incorporating Sharia law into US law
...Acorn is responsible for his election
...He pals around with terrorists (Ayers)
...His long association with US hater and liberationist christian Rev Wright makes him a radical. His christianity is unrecognizable.
...Created a government logo eerily similar to soviet hammer and sickle
...He will indoctrination our schoolkids with annual speech
...No wonder he's ineffective and failing: he spends all his time on expensive vacations (still a weekly meme)
...He's a racist who doesn't like white people (Beck)
...Sestak scandal (lasted only a week but surfaces ocassionally in passing)
...His Chicago style politics is brutal and unAmerican. BP escrow fund is Chicago style shakedown
...He was involved in weird land deal with shady characters to expand his shady Chicago property
...Death panels
...Obama is an enemy of Israel
And this is just for PObama over the last two years. There's a long list for dems generally and for Pelosi and Reid as well. This is why billions have been invested in think tanks and media ownership over the last 30 years...to control the voting and donating base with misinformation. "They talk about me like I'm a dog." It works. He is being de-legitimized as POTUS and as a person.
I think getting them out in one place would be helpful and would point out how laughable they are. To be sure, there are legitimate issues to talk about with Obama's presidency. Those don't work nearly as well as fear mongering based on lies.
