Next for GOP leaders: Stopping Palin
By: Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei
October 31, 2010 08:31 PM EDT

Top Republicans in Washington and in the national GOP establishment say the 2010 campaign highlighted an urgent task that they will begin in earnest as soon as the elections are over: Stop Sarah Palin.

Interviews with advisers to the main 2012 presidential contenders and with other veteran Republican operatives make clear they see themselves on a common, if uncoordinated, mission of halting the momentum and credibility Palin gained with conservative activists by plunging so aggressively into this year’s midterm campaigns.

There is rising expectation among GOP elites that Palin will probably run for president in 2012 and could win the Republican nomination, a prospect many of them regard as a disaster in waiting.

Many of these establishment figures argue in not-for-attribution comments that Palin’s nomination would ensure President Barack Obama’s reelection, as the deficiencies that marked her 2008 debut as a vice presidential nominee — an intensely polarizing political style and often halting and superficial answers when pressed on policy — have shown little sign of abating in the past two years.

"There is a determined, focused establishment effort … to find a candidate we can coalesce around who can beat Sarah Palin," said one prominent and longtime Washington Republican. "We believe she could get the nomination, but Barack Obama would crush her."

5. That sounds right.
Then... I'm not so sure Mama Grizzles and her sheepish nutjobs will bow out gracefully. A third party run is definitely not out of the question with this wacky bunch.

6. That would be awesome. Palin as the Tea Party candidate. Mitt, probably, as the Republican
vs. Obama.

8. If she loses the nom, I can envision a bitter Sarah running on the new Tea Party ticket.
 Remember, Todd Palin was a radical inde who wanted to secede from the union.

9. I've been saying this for almost two years
A friend who has ties to RNC batcave meetings has said essentially after Palin quit her Alaska gig that they will destroy her with a treasure trove of unreleased scandals that would sink her in a week unless she just plays cheerleader.

I want her to run!

29. Wouldn't be necessary. If the media stopped covering her and focused on someone
else instead, most of her support would wither.

16. Honestly, I don't think she has any real chance to win the nomination...
She is indeed a completely ignorant air head who can hardly manage to avoid serious scandals which follow her like flies follow a pile of shit (sorry, that's an insult to shit).

The republican elite are stupid enough to have built their base on the truly ignorant. If the truly ignorant bit them back by nominating Palin it will be a fitting lesson indeed.

19. Honestly, I'd probably register as a Republican to vote against her
Yes, she'd likely get crushed by Obama. But there's always a chance that a person nominated by a major party can win. And this woman is a crazy, unhinged, idiot who would be a catastrophic president. Seriously: she makes Dubya look like an intelligent, sober, level-headed statesman. And I genuinely fear, not just for our country but for the world, if she's elected.

So yes, I would be willing to hand Obama a stronger GE opponent just so we don't risk a Palin presidency.

25. Palin is nicely positioned to create considerable havoc in
the Pukes' nomination process.

I wish her the best in that endeavor.

But the GOP power-brokers are going to do everything they can to derail her. In the best scenario, they'll only be half successful.

26. The BFEE Will Consolidate Around John Ellis Bush And Put An End To This Tom Foolery
He's the only candidate who can consolidate the Republican base and unite all the desparate groups. If he decides to run, and he says he won't as if that really matters, he will crush Sarah Palin like an ant.

30. I have mixed feelings about her running.
On the one hand, I think she would get crushed like an annoying and poisonous insect.

On the other hand, I don't think I could take months and months of seeing her yapping, vapid face and her getting even more attention.
