The editorial board of The Repository shows its lack of understanding of what got us into our current situation of unemployment and debt through its endorsement of Rob Portman (“Portman will focus on the practical,” Oct. 21). This ignorance is reflected by most independent swing voters.
Portman was the U.S. trade representative and director of the Office of Management and Budget during the Bush administration whose policies caused the greatest loss of jobs and the biggest deficits since the Great Depression and World War II.
Republicans in general support the export of jobs overseas for the sake of corporate profits. Republicans in general want to privatize — read: eliminate — Social Security and Medicare. The national debt was tripled by Reagan’s tax cuts. The debt was doubled again by Bush’s tax cuts.
Portman, of course, is in favor of extending tax cuts for those with taxable income over $200,000, which would add billions more to the national debt. By far, the largest contributors to the national debt in the last 30 years have been the Reagan-Bush tax cuts and the Bush-Cheney Iraq occupation — all supported by Republican Portman.
Portman supports “free trade,” which means exporting Ohio jobs overseas. Portman has no idea how to return Ohio to prosperity.
