That Was Quick: Obama Officially Unloved By DU
The Democratic President of the US accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo today. One would think that this would bring a tear to the hearts of most at a site named "Democratic Underground". Yet, looking at the http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=greatest_threads&topten=1">Top Tens page, I'm blown away to find that not one of the ten most-recommended posts in the past 24 hours is about said event.

We're not talking the "recs minus unrecs" top tens, the ones that get scored down by our beloved unrec-ing crew. Even looking at just recs, it seems that few at DU have the stomach for the odd speech of the President aggressively promoting war in accepting a peace prize.

Welcome to Oceania: War is peace!

There's a bunch of other big hits for Obama on that page:

On eve of receiving Nobel, Obama's DOJ files amicus brief upending Nuremberg Protocols.
The Rude Pundit: From Oslo, Barack Obama Wasn't Talking to You
Obama's 47 Percent Approval Lowest of Any President at This Point

and so forth.

Some say that this is simply, well, "Navel gazing, self-defeatism, hysteria, asshattery." I disagree. Rather, I see it as a healthy sign that Democrats are learning. Clinton was able to pull off sending our jobs to Asia and deregulating Wall Street before most committed Democrats figured out what infernal business he was up to. Now we've "gotten it" in less than a year - much better! This time we have an opportunity to head it off before a second term.

Three more years until the primaries: I'll drink tonight's beer to the hope that we can find an ass-kicking member of the Democratic wing of our party to move the country forward.

OK unrec-ers... you know what to do...

reverberation from Oslo. I thought the address was at once heady and humble but loved it for its wide, deep, scope and its long look into history.

It was absolutely an address worthy of a Nobel laureate.

It was also absolutely an address by a humble man who quickly acknowledged his stature in that long historical look back. I heard, felt, and saw the anonymous women and men Obama referenced as those who have suffered for their dignity and who have fought to restore it under abominable conditions.

Hold the election tomorrow morning. Plenty of votes at my place for Barack Obama.

41. I'm for bringing pressure to bear on the system with a view toward
alleviating the misery in our economic system and the injustice in our judicial system and the perilous crisis in the environment.

If I am given the chance I'll handpick Senators to my liking -- folks like Wellstone, Whitehouse, Birch Bayh, John Kerry certainly, and right on down a list of progressive minds.

So far, though, that phone call hasn't come in!

When it does, I'm ready.

50. Sometimes the most honest answers
come from the heart, as well as the mind. You don't KNOW anymore about what our POTUS's intentions are than anyone else, so kill me for thinking positive thoughts. I just don't CARE what everyone else thinks, so I would say I'm a pretty independant thinker. It took me 71 years as a Democrat to get this way.

Your last sentence is very telling "Please, don't feel a need to reply, cause I'm not hearing any of it." That basically encapsulates the entire rah rah crowd in one sentence. Ignoring policy failure just because you "love your president". Principles or personality?

nor banksters or food poisoners.

Frankly, I'm just dumfounded- flabbergasted and appalled by the way the Justice Department has been run up 'til now. It makes no sense at all to me either in terms of the public interest or as political currency for the administration.

22. Hi, depakid. A few posters every now and then offer a wider look at
Democrats, at least the ones they generally and genuinely admire, and some of the findings lean toward the best of the bunch being qualified for more than one role.

Had Obama not won the White House he would have made a terrific HUD Secretary, IMO. The very strengths and experiences Sarah Palin tried to ridicule in him would effectively address widespread strife and suffering and genuinely help people who need and deserve the help.

Kerry is not very flashy, which puts him on the "no can do" list of newer progressives, but were they to carefully consider his decades-long voting record I think they would be very enthusiastic about it, and justifiably so. And while I think he is strong as Chair of the SFRC, he would in fact make an equally convincing Sec of State or he could head up Justice. Holder is no dummy but Kerry is quite a damn bit more focused.

If we're flipping thru the channels and Kerry is speaking on the floor of the Senate on C-Span, I will stop what I'm doing and listen.

You can be certain I wouldn't do the same for John Cornyn or Orrin Hatch.

I wish he'd have run again in 2008, because I thought all our candidates overall were pretty week. I was happy to vote for Obama, but considering that we could have elected just about anybody in the last cycle given the way things were going, I kind of wish we had gone for someone more progressive.

13. Obama has turned out to be what many of us thought
last year, he gives great speeches, period. He had no experience in government, just charisma and BS when he decided to run for President. Oh he goes to Oslo to pick up an award he didn't earn and makes a great speech. One good thing when he is over there he isn't spending us into bankruptcy.
This coming year is going to be a total blood bath. Who you going to send to the slaughter in 2012?

35. No he hasn't even started yet. What will health care cost us?
What does he plan on spending on another make-work program? How much more are the wars going to cost us? If you want jobs, drop the HCR now, don't spend the TARP money on another Stimulus. If you want people to have jobs quit scaring the hell out of employers and consumers. In order to make jobs you need to consumers to have the confidence to buy things and employers that have confidence in a recovery that will sustain jobs. It's the uncertainty that is preventing an economic recovery. Job one should have been to get the economy going before all this talk about spending the money we don't have. just because GWB tripled the debt doesn't mean we have to triple it too.

I think people way overuse the words love and hate. Do you really mean love? And if so, how? And is that why some people immediately jump to sayng others "hate" him, because they think it's the opposite of what they feel for him? I really don't get any of that.

So far, Obama is a major disappointment on both policy and intellectual grounds (hated the Nobel speech--which was eloquent on the surface, but laced with bellicose oversimplifications).

What we see here is an honest, probably inevitable response to the present situation.

62. people are waking up from the mass delusion
that obama was anything other than a moderate liberal trending toward centerist.

the irony of this is that obama has stuck to his campaign promises and delivered on them more than i could have ever hoped in my wildest dreams. so while he may be completely and utterly disappointing most people here he is absolutely astounding me. change has happened, even if it isn't readily apparent by progressive standards.

here's a little bit of "what if" as food for thought. what if kucinich (my idealism got the best of me during the election, but i was under no delusion that he would get anywhere) had been elected and he was doing battle with this "do nothing" congress? I can count on one hand the number of dem congressional backers he would have had solidly in his corner. right now we have centerist obama, with his "everyone has a seat at the table" philosophy, and he still can't even get all the blue dogs on his side.

in spite of my progressive politics, i have a heavy streak of pragmatism. lets not pretend that progressive policies have a champion in obama. lets also not pretend that progressive policies will ever get the support of the blue dogs. we need not even mention the repug scums. obama's nobel speech was the perfect allegory for the challenges we progressives face.
