He's saying there may be a candidate from the left, and Obama/Dems, and a GOP candidate, and a wingnut on the right. Which means that any one of those could win without the usual majority of those voting.

In the end, after forcing concessions from the center candidates, I have the feeling the outliers will fold and pledge their votes. But, it would be a good way to apply pressure on the centers.
