Great letter in the Denver Post. "Twenty-one months. That is all they get."
This was written by an articulate woman from Colorado Springs. I wish I had written it.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/eletters/?source=nav_ins_opinion

"So, many in this country decided Tuesday that the Democrats had plenty of time to undo the damage caused by the Republicans over eight long years. They have said that 21 months should have been plenty of time to restore the economy, get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan and put everyone back to work. Well then, I now give the Republicans in the U.S. House 21 months to undo the damages they initially caused themselves.

In a way, it is nice. Let them use their own methods to get us out of the messes they created. If, by October 2012, we are not all employed, living comfortably, have restored the deficit to where Bill Clinton left it in 2009, and are completely out of all wars in the Middle East, then I challenge those same voters to undo the damage they have done this week and put the Democrats back into office. Twenty-one months. That is all they get. Good luck, may the force be with them, and God help us all."

With Keith and the new countdown it seems the game is afoot. Let's keep it going. :toast:

the continued problems since they did not own the Senate nor the WH.
And it doesnt help that Obama is clearly signaling he will do whatever the repubs want fort he next 2 years...bringing back the 8-years we all remember so well.

Just like I'm reading what you have wrote right now, and I don't agree with it.
Obama can listen to them as well, doesn't mean he will agree.

8. We could call all our congress critters, especially the goppers.
Yes, most especially the gop. Reminding them from time to time is our citizenly duty and the least we can do. And being excruciatingly polite goes without saying. Hubris, thy name is GOP.

9. political strategists hate risking candidates' fates on the economy
because the economy is fickle, subject to forces far beyond the control of the government, let alone a party or any individual, even the president or the fed chairman (though they can certainly influence it to an extent).

in this case, i'm fairly confident that we will see frustratingly slow improvement, but improvement nonetheless. not that congress will have a hand in it, gridlock and distractions will reign for the next 2 years.

republicans will be able to make an economic case no matter what. if the economy improves, they can take credit by saying they put a stop to obama's "liberal" agenda. if the economy tanks or goes sideways, well, four years of a sucky economy is not good at all for an incumbent president.

no, if the republicans want 2 years of political theater, then 2 years of political theater they shall have. but we need to set the agenda. while the house goes digging for scandals, the senate needs to propose BIG JOBS BILLS. republicans will propose red meat and wedge issue bills knowing full well they'll never become law -- but democrats can do the same thing.

the question is, will we ever learn to FIGHT and use the tactics of FIGHTERS?

12. So what should they do to counter that? The GOP seems to be able to make hay in a hurricane.
And this tax thing that's coming up. The gop leadership had to have been chortling when they passed the tax cuts set to retire in when they might not hold the White House. How serendipitous for them. What did FDR do? It was pretty down and dirty then. I knew I should have actually done the reading in American history class.

14. well, the fdr had people in the streets making noise and forcing him to help the poor.
and back then, the media covered it.

nowadays, when we get a million people to march on washington, the media ignores or dismisses it.

so the rich people get heard and the poor people get ignored.

we have to figure out a way to get heard.

democrats in congress need to adopt hard-hitting tactics. bipartisanship should be offered, and if rejected, QUICKLY replaced with a sound thumping, and then followed by another offer of bipartisanship, until they learn to behave. as you say, republicans are always able to find weapons to use no matter what; we need to do the same AND not be afraid to use them.

the key is the rest of us, the activists, the supporters, and voters -- we need to have the democrats' backs. we need to force them to do our bidding, not just be republican-lite.

now, if i knew how to do THAT, i probably wouldn't just be idly posting on du....

As for the short attention span, want it all, want it now public citizenry. We should point them in the direction of their local gopper representatives.

16. We are 1/3 of the electorate. The gop has about 1/3, and independents and others are about 1/3.
The state Dems know that if they can GOTV in El Paso County we help carry the state in the national offices. The local level is another story. But we still have two in the state house. Senator Morse and Rep. Pete Lee. They are awesome. And I believe our local chamber endorsed Hickenlooper. That was a jaw dropper. I didn't know they were so pragmatic.

21. I think I'd give the voters a little more credit than that ...
... I think that the Dems got the boot not only because things things still suck after two years but also because in two years Obama and the Dems could not make it clear that they were working on it.

They could see how wall street was put back on their feet but for the poor and middle class they still had to think about it.

This is an election the Dems should have won.

Too bad about the typo but I think the sentiment expressed is perfect. I am thinking I might make the correction to the 2009 mistake and send it in an e-mail to every Repub, or maybe to every person that I know.

There are some very good DUers from the Springs, and they deserve support and care, NOT derision.

What the hell does it take to get people to think beyond stereotypes? Have the real lessons of WWII been totally forgotten?

38. actually, there are any number of articulate and intelligent women here in CS, AND pagans. don't
know where you got the idea that they ran the pagans out, because they most certainly did not. nice gratuitous insult, though.

CS is home to fungus, new life, etc., and in one of the reddest counties in the country. it is also, by the way, home to some of the best private schools and colleges in the country. but then, it would require looking beyond your preconceptions to see that, wouldn't it?

in case you didn't figure it out, I am one of those articulate, intelligent, pagan women you don't think exist here.

And I love them. Several times when I've been at the grocery and have bought flowers, and I see a car with anything neo pagan on it, I have put a little blossom under the windshield wiper. The way I see it, the neo pagans are more like free thinkers. They are more genuine in their religious beliefs than anyone at Focus.

31. The next 21 months will still be blamed on Obama
If the Reuthugs try and fail to pass their destructive agenda past the Dem-majority Senate and/or over Obama's veto, they and their allies in the corporate media will hoot and holler twice as loud going into the 2012 elections that the continued economic mess is the fault of the president.

And the same fools who voted for them on Tuesday will get fooled again.

Cheney said deficits don't matter, then proved that they do. Even GHW Bush new they matter and trickle down doesn't work. And he had to raise taxes. The Bush Cheney era was a disaster for this country.
