White House signals compromise on tax cuts

(Reuters) - A conciliatory White House said on Thursday it was willing to negotiate with Republicans on tax cut extensions, but Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell took a hard line against compromises with President Barack Obama in a new Congress.

In the first possible policy shift since Democrats suffered heavy election losses two days ago, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs signaled Obama was open to talks on a temporary extension for the wealthy of Bush-era tax cuts that expire at the end of the year.

The fight over tax cuts looms as one of the biggest clashes since the election between Obama and Republicans, who will control the House of Representatives in the new Congress that convenes in January.

Obama invited top leaders from both parties to a meeting and a dinner at the White House on November 18, and he said the tax cuts will top the agenda.

23. Temp. Extension is the real danger...

OBama has clearly left open the idea that temp extension for the rich is good with him. So all Repubs will do is make sure to pass a single bill that includes not only for the rich but the middle-class too so then Obama will be forced to sign. Democrats best strategy would be to separate the bills and then veto the upper-class one but democrats never have the guts to do so...so the only thing left is hopefully obama just vetos that single bill....that would be unfortunate because now repubs have a vice on him to use that he raised taxes on middle-class....seriously, they really should have dealt with this before repubs took control

Temp extension will keep it alive until 2012 where Repubs will use it against Obama still and will demand another extension or if they get control then they will make it permanent.

Kill it now or this will pretty much leave a giant whole on govern. revenue permanently.

But the sad truth is Obama just doesnt have the guts to fight republicans. IN all likelihood he will cave in and give them what they want....again.
